Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my child needs tutoring?
As professional educators, we hear this very important question all the time.  Virtually every student can benefit from the personal attention that Successful Scholars can provide. Whether your child is currently having trouble with a particular subject, struggling with study skills and/or organization, or preparing for a college admission test, Successful Scholars can work with you to achieve those goals.

The easiest indicator that a student needs help and would highly benefit from tutoring is how long they have been struggling. When children experience difficulties learning, the ramifications can be extreme. Such difficulties can diminish self-esteem, threaten a child's motivation towards learning, and can expand to limit a child's immediate and future potential.

One-on-one tutoring can fill in the gaps in your child’s learning foundation, and restore their self-esteem. Students with one-on-one tutors do better in school, excel faster, and develop positive self-esteem and self-confidence.

As parents you might hear phrases like: "I don't like school," "I hate homework," and "The teacher doesn’t like me.”  These might be the signs of underlying issues such as:

  • Feeling of frustration and inadequacy because he or she is falling behind and doesn’t understand the material covered in class.

  • Lack in organizational skills (losing assignments, not completing homework, not turning in assignments.)

  • Your child is not responding to their current teacher.

It’s a common myth that some children just aren’t good students and are destined to be good at some subjects and not others. Children are natural learners and no students should ever have to score lower than a B. Our company has turned F’s into B’s with patience and work so I know that it can be done.

All students, even academically successful ones, can benefit from tutoring. Our tutors can ensure that students have a solid foundation, and they can teach them skills beyond the curriculum that they will use in and out of the classroom.

What geographical areas do Successful Scholars service?
Successful Scholars Tutoring is an online tutoring service that proudly serves nationwide across the United States! We are available for tutoring sessions in all time zones hosted in our virtual learning environment over Zoom.

What if my child doesn’t like the Tutor?
In our initial consultation, we will try to learn about your child’s personality and learning style. We will use that information to select a tutor we believe will be a good match both in skills and personality. Our tutors make every effort to develop a positive, constructive relationship with the student, but if you do not think the tutor is a good match, Successful Scholars will assign another tutor to work with your child.

Where does the Tutor meet with the Student?
Since we are an online tutoring service, we are able to service your student where ever they are located. All you need is a smart phone, tablet, laptop, or computer with a stable internet connection.

What method of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, checks and PayPal.

How is Successful Scholars Tutoring different from a learning center?
The main advantages to Successful Scholars include one-to-one instruction, convenience, flexibility, and the use of your child’s own curriculum.

One-to-One Instruction – Unlike the classroom environment where students have a difficult time receiving the attention they need and are hesitant to ask questions, Successful Scholars offer one-on-one instruction where our tutors not only teach students how to master specific skills, allow them to learn at their own pace, but, in a larger sense, teach students how to learn.

Convenience – At Successful Scholars Tutoring, our tutors are available online over our virtual classroom hosted over Zoom.

Flexibility – Our tutors work with the individual schedules of busy families. Tutoring sessions can easily be coordinated with other extra-curricular activities.

Curriculum – Our qualified tutors do not believe in a “one size fits all” program that may not relate to what the student is working on in school and will design a program for the student that is based on their school's curriculum.

Our program begins by focusing on an overall approach to learning: study skills and academic organization because we believe that it is the foundation to long lasting and effective learning.

Using the student’s school curriculum as a guideline, the tutor will review anything the student did not understand in the classroom and augment those materials with targeted exercises and activities based on the student’s specific needs.

We will also interface with your child's teacher, if necessary; to be sure your child is on the right track. It is truly a one-on-one customized tutoring. â€‹â€‹â€‹

How often does the Student meet with the Tutor?
Typically, the tutor meets with the student once or twice a week for one to two hours each session. The frequency and the length of the sessions will ultimately be determined by the student’s needs and the parents’ requests.

Do you provide services to students with Special Needs or Learning Disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia or others?
Yes. Successful Scholars tutors know that children with learning disabilities have special needs when it comes to instruction. Many of our tutors have Special Education degrees, certifications and/or experience working with students with special needs and will be able to work in conjunction with the school's I.E.P. guidelines to help your child. Please contact us to discuss your child’s specific needs.

What are the qualifications of your tutors?
All our tutors are experts in their respective fields and include professional scientists, PhDs, writers, and educators (public and private school teachers and retired teachers.)  Most of them are certified teachers with strong credentials, and all possess a college degree and relevant tutoring experience. In addition, our tutors are thoroughly screened and background checked before hiring. When you request private tutoring, you will be matched with an expert tutor based on your student’s academic needs, learning style, and personality.
